Relations between China and African countries have a long history. On Sunday, July 5th, 2020, the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Ghana celebrated 60 years of bilateral and diplomatic relations.
President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China in his congratulatory message to Ghana’s President Akuffo Addo stated that “since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic ties 60 years ago, the traditional friendship between China and Ghana has grown stronger with practical cooperation yielding fruitful results, China-Ghana relations have shown a sound momentum for all-round development in recent years, bringing tangible benefits to both peoples.” President Akuffo Addo, on his part, promised to collaborate with President Xi to consolidate the age-long friendship further.
Mr. Edward Boateng, the current Ghanaian Ambassador to China in his speech on the 60th Anniversary celebration, encouraged Chinese investors to take advantage of Ghana’s peaceful business environment and strategic status as host of the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, to the gateway to Africa’s 1.2 billion people.
Over the years, Ghana and China have engaged bilaterally on different fronts, including culture, investment, trade, education, among others. The two countries officially established diplomatic relations on July 5th, 1960. China has become an essential player in Ghana’s socio-economic transformation agenda. China is not just Ghana’s largest investor, but also with a trade volume of 7.46 billion U.S. dollars in 2019, China is currently Ghana’s biggest trading partner.
